2007 BMW X5 3.0 si Review
When it debuted seven years ago, the X5 was a very BMW take on the then-new crossover SUV concept. SUVs in those days were generally ponderous utility-oriented trucks, the antithesis of all that BMW had built its reputation on. The X5 was different. Made in America (Spartanburg, South Carolina, to be exact) primarily for the American market, the X5 had nearly all of the handling and performance virtues of its sedan or wagon relatives, with extra ground clearance and an appropriate rugged look. It looked like an SUV, but BMW called it a "Sports Activity Vehicle", or SAV, and registered the term and abbreviation. To say it was successful would be massive understatement. But seven years in today's ultracompetitive automotive industry is an eternity. All of the X5's competitors have been renewed in that time, and that left it lacking in some areas.
BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept
Yesterday, DailyTech reported on VW's intention to bring a diesel-electric hybrid Golf to market. The hybrid powertrain would boost fuel economy to nearly 70 MPG on the small two/four-door hatchback. BMW also has diesel-electric hybrids on the brain with its new Vision EfficientDynamics concept vehicle. The concept is based on the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Variable Twin Turbo diesel engine. The diesel motor develops 204 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the previous BMW X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle which was a full hybrid, the Vision EfficientDynamics is a mild-hybrid vehicle. A 15kw generator boosts total power to 221 HP, while regenerative braking steps in to help power the vehicle's electrical systems and recharge the rear-mounted lithium-ion battery pack.
Memphis-Tennessee caps full day of college hoops
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- To sum up the difference between Tennessee and Memphis, let's examine the postgame scene. The Vols are on quite a joy ride, best illustrated by coach Bruce Pearl. The amiable coach's postgame journey took him from the media interview to a fake "Entertainment Tonight" bit to his egging on the fans' No. 1 chants and "Rocky Top" singing, finally ending at his radio show. Meanwhile, Memphis' locker room was a tomb. Lockers were slammed. Heads hung low. Senior Joey Dorsey never raised his head. Junior Chris Douglas-Roberts didn't remove a jersey from his face. Three players talked and didn't say much, other than junior Robert Dozier who said that the Vols "outplayed us to every loose ball" and "they were the better team." Freshman Derrick Rose said that he "felt empty" after the first loss of the season.
